Felt, a pedal, and patience
- The hammer is wool
Every piano note starts with a felt hammer hitting a string. Softer felt, slower hands: rounder notes.
- Una corda
The soft pedal shifts the hammers so they strike fewer strings. Same melody, less of it.
- The moderator
Many upright pianos can drop a strip of felt in front of the strings. That muffled, close sound is what “felt piano” means.

Purrple Cat tracks where the piano leads and the playing stays gentle: quiet level, soft attacks, warm tone and no sudden jumps. 112 pieces from 27 records made the cut. Tracks with vocals and the Halloween records are left out.
What do Soft, Softer and Softest mean?
Every piece has a felt grade from how quiet, rounded and steady it measures. Softest is the gentlest third, Soft the liveliest third. Pick one with the felt buttons and the player only plays pieces at that grade or softer.
